Champaign has 18 schools. ISBE assigns every school for grades K-12 a “summative designation.” We have one exemplary school (Carrie Busey), 10 commendable schools, and 6 schools that are underperforming for one or more groups of students. A school is designated underperforming when it has a group of students whose level of proficiency is as low as the lowest 5% of schools in the state. For instance, South Side Elementary School is underperforming for black students and low income students, and Jefferson Middle School is underperforming for students who have an Individualized Education Plan.
Overall, 31% of students in our district are at (or above) grade level in math, and 30% are proficient in English Language Arts. Only 6% of our black students are at grade level in math, and 8% in ELA. Our children are very bright and they can learn! We need to improve the quality of education so that our community’s children can reach their potential and make their dreams come true!
67% of our graduates need remedial classes in community college.
